The Sonic Road Podcast

The stuff that doesn't make it to YouTube.

What's up everybody — Beau here.

I want to take you back a little bit on this one. Earlier this year, I had Jay Buchanan from Rival Sons on the podcast. We talked about his debut solo album Weapons of Beauty, his process of writing it alone in an underground bunker in the Mojave Desert, and the spirit of making art the way it should be made — human, analog, and real. That episode is already out there as Episode 28 if you haven't heard it yet.

But there's a story I didn't tell Jay during the interview. I didn't tell Michael Miley either when I had him on. It never felt like the right moment to bring it up. It's a bit of a bummer, and when you're sitting across from someone whose music changed your life, sometimes you just want to talk about the music and keep it moving. So I'm going to tell you here instead. This is how I became a fan of Rival Sons.

It was a couple of weeks after my mom unexpectedly passed away. I was still deep in the clutches of grief, not really functioning, not really processing, just kind of moving through the days. And my friend randomly sent me a link to the band's recently released album Head Down.
